The АА818  by Altair Aerial is a brand-new drone that has just been released, but it immediately strikes you with its good looks and build quality. It’s made for beginner flyers, so it’s relatively cheap, coming up at under $200.

One of the most interesting things about this drone is that it’s made by Altair – a USA based Small Business in Nebraska, which relies heavily on good service and customer support – something that we’re not used to, as most cheaper quadcopters come from China, with hard to understand half-translated manuals that are just confusing to say the least.

That being said, In today’s review of the АА818  i’ll take a deeper look into the specifications of this quadcopter and see what it’s capable of.

Let’s start with the looks:

Design

The design of the AA818 Plus is simple but effective. The body of the drone is quite regular in terms of size, but the difference comes from the 4 “rings” which act as propeller guards on each arm of the drone. The plastic guards actually make the drone look bulkier than it really is, but that’s not necessarily a bad thing – on the contrary, since it’s made for beginners, this will actually help you in the long run, as the guards will keep your drone safe from obstacles or crashes, protecting the arms and the propellers.

The АА818 Plus comes in a black and blue colour combo, which I quite like. It has LED lights on the bottom of the arms, so you can follow it even when the light is not optimal and you can differentiate between the front and the back of the aircraft.

Flying the AA818 Plus

This quadcopter is made mostly for beginners, so flying it definitely isn’t hard, even if that’s your first quadcopter ever. However, even if you’re more experienced, you’ll have fun with this one, as it has a few different speed modes. You can choose between flying modes 1, 2 and 3, and each of those modes gives you more speed and agility. I highly suggest that you select the lowest speed mode if you’re a beginner, and slowly increase it once you get more comfortable at flying the drone. In flying mode 3 you will definitely feel the difference, as the quadcopter is a lot more agile and really flies a lot quicker.

Flying the АА818 outdoors is very doable, but i’d still recommend you to do it in calmer weather with little to no wind – even though the quadcopter is quite solid and medium-sized, sometimes a wind gust might pick the drone up and fly it into an obstacle without you being able to stop it on time.

In fact, as the drone comes with 4 “rings”, acting as propeller guards, the drone will be able to withhold some serious damage before braking a propeller or a piece of its body. So the AA818 Plus definitely gets an excellent grade in terms of durability.

Capabilities

The camera of the АА818 comes pre-installed, so you don’t have to purchase one separately. It’s a 120 degree Wide-angle 720P HD camera, which I actually really like, as it’s a rubber damper camera, which ensures your photos or videos won’t be blurry or shaky (or at least it will significantly lower the blurriness or shakiness of your shots). One huge advantage of having such camera is the ability to control the drone via FPV (first-person-view) from the screen of your smartphone or via VR goggles, which you should buy separately.

You can control the drone with the FlyingSee App by UDI RC, which is available both for Android and iOS devices. That’s great, as this app is quite easy to use and gives you more flexibility when you control your drone.

Once you’re up in the air, you can create your custom route via the smartphone app, and the drone will fly it by itself – that’s a feature which is present in the more expensive drones on the market and I’m quite happy to see it in a sub-$200 drone – it goes to show that we’re reaching a point where technologies are getting more advanced and cheaper to implement even in the lower-budget quadcopters.

Other than that, the AA818 Plus has all the necessary feature you should look for in a beginner quadcopter, such as Headless mode, Altitude Mode, 1-button takeoff and landing, emergency landing, Low Battery Alarm and Out of Range Alarm.

Battery life

Altair Aerial states that the battery life of the AA818 is up to 15 minutes, which is one of the longest flight times in any drone within this price point. On top of that, you get a second battery in the box, so that basically doubles your flight time and gives you a total of around 30 minutes – right up there with the bigger and a lot more expensive drones such as the DJI Mavic Pro or the DJI Phantom 4 Pro. Quite spectacular for a drone that costs less than $200.

What you get in the box

  • 1 x Altair Aerial AA818 Plus Drone Fully Assembled with 4 Propellers
  • 2 x Batteries – 7.4v LiPo
  • 1 x USB Charging Cable
  • 1 x Card Reader (Memory Card Not Included)
  • 4 x Extra Propellers
  • 1 x Prop Installation kit & screwdriver
  • 1 x Manual

Price and where to buy

Currently, the Altair AA818 Plus is priced at $159.80 and could be purchased on Amazon US.

As for all the International shoppers – visit Altair’s official website to purchase the drone from there.

Final thoughts

Overall, I definitely like the AA818 Plus a lot. The fact that it comes with 2 batteries resulting in a total flight time of around 30 minutes, the solid construction and the great camera make this a must-have drone for any beginner, or a great gift for your child or why not even your girlfriend? 🙂

As the drone is still quite new on the market, I’m sure there will be things that I can add up to this review, so stay tuned as I plan to update it soon with more relevant information once I’m able to provide it for you.

Does the the AA818 have a ‘return home’ feature?

Thanks for the great summary.

Hey Cody! Unfortunately it does not, you have to manually fly it back to your location. But once it comes back to you, you can use the 1-button landing and it will land by itself.

Hello. I was wondering if the camera can be pointed straight down, to get a zenithal view (directly from above) Thank you

Hey Manuel! No, the camera is not adjustable – it stays in one position only (facing forward)

hello, great write-up. can you tell me if the camera is only viewable via smartphone or vr goggles, or is it possible to also use a tablet? my son is 6 years old and doesn’t have a phone. but he has a table I can download the app to. thanks in advance
