The Blackhawk by Altair Aerial is a brand-new drone that has just been released, and it’s the third drone released by the US Nebraska-based company Altair Aerial. After the AA108 and the 818, which were both geared towards the beginners, the Blackhawk comes with the intermediate fliers in mind – it is faster, flies further and generally has more capabilities than the other two drones they have made so far.

So in this Altair Blackhawk review I’m interested to see how the Blackhawk will stack up against the bigger drones on the market, the ones that offer more technology inside but also cost a bit more money.

That being said, let’s start with the looks of the quadcopter:

Design

Let’s start with the overall design and the look of the drone. The main body of the Blackhawk comes in a really cool military green colour, and the other exterior parts are painted in black. So the black and green colour combo definitely works in my opinion and the end result is a beautiful-looking quadcopter which stands out when compared to the other drones within that price point.

Flying the Altair Blackhawk

The Blackhawk has an extended flight time, coming up at around 15-17 minutes, depending on the flight conditions. That is more than what we’re used getting in the sub-$200 drones, so I definitely like that. You can use this extended flight time to fly within 300 to 500 meters away from you, as that’s the flight range of the Blackhawk. I personally don’t advise you to try and test the maximum flight range, as that’s where most accidents happen (especially if you don’t see the drone very well), so I would keep it in my line of sight at all times, and try not to fly it too far from myself.

In addition, as all the other drones from Altair, you have the choice between high and low speed of flying, so you can start off slowly in the beginning and work your way up once you get more comfortable flying the Blackhawk.

Camera

The Blackhawk definitely stands out from its similarly-priced competition with this feature, as it allows you to mount a GoPro camera and use it when flying. This is a huge advantage as the GoPro’s quality will be much better than the regular 720p drone camera that you can find on the most cheaper quadcopters nowadays. You can use a GoPro Hero 3 or 4 with the Blackhawk, but unfortunately due to the size of the camera mount (41mm x 59mm x 30 mm), the drone will not be compatible with the GoPro Hero5 or Hero6. However, if you own any other action camera that fits the dimensions of the camera mount – you will be able to use it with this drone.

Surely, if you don’t already own a GoPro or another action-camera that might be a bummer as you’ll have to invest in one if you want to shoot any photos or videos with this drone, but if you do – the Blackhawk will definitely be a good choice for you.

Remote controller & Battery life

The remote controller of the Blackhawk is a basic one, but it definitely gets the job done – it has all the necessary buttons for controlling & trimming your drone, and using it is quite straightforward.

On the other hand, the battery life is something that I definitely like a lot about this drone – it’s around 15-17 minutes, which is plenty when compared to similarly priced drones. The battery of the drone is a standard 7.4V LiPo battery, which mounts on the bottom of the aircraft.

Even though the battery life is significantly better than what we usually get, I think it’s mandatory for every drone lover to have at least a few spare batteries for their drones, so I highly recommend you to get a spare one.

Price and where to buy

Currently, the Altair Blackhawk is priced at $109.80 and if you’re based in the USA or Canada, you can buy it on Amazon

As for all the International shoppers – you can visit Altair’s official website to purchase the drone from there.

Final thoughts

Finally, for the price that it comes in, the Blackhawk is a great drone for everyone that is looking for a more exciting and thrilling experience when flying a drone. If you’re a complete beginner, you might want to take a look at their beginner drone – the AA108. However, if you have flown a drone before, the Blackhawk will definitely be a step up from the regular cheaper quadcopters, as it will give you more flight time and more flight range than they can.

Moreover, if you own a GoPro camera or any other action camera that fits in the camera mount bracket of the Blackhawk, you’ll definitely enjoy the drone, as the quality of your photos and videos will be much better than the regular 720p cameras from other quadcopters within that price range.
